Cuffern Manor - Country House Bed and Breakfast

Some firsts for Cuffern Manor:

In May we had our first wedding reception for Gareth and Rachel from Bridgewater. Rather more stressful have been preparations for Amy, our daughter’s wedding , here on July 27th!

Another first will be our hosting of the cycle company Bicycle Beano’s West Wales week in August. See www.bicyclebeano. co.uk-but its all sold out this year.

“Bicycle Beano holidays are cycling idealism come true – the tours combine the best countryside in Wales, the quietest roads, gorgeous accommodation and a superb bounty of home-made vegetarian food."
The Sunday Times

Finally our first award. Pembrokeshire County Council presented us with a Pembrokeshire Produce award at the County Show in August for ‘ the best use of local food on a menu ‘. We have fixed the local suppliers we use for the main breakfast ingredients after some trial and error, the Natural Grocer for the bread, Welsh Hook for bacon and Harmony Herd for sausages. I collected the whiskey Jayne wasn’t able to attend the presentation—she was cooking breakfast!

Award Ceremony

Harmony Herd won a gold award recently at the True Taste of Wales Awards, best organic meat products in Wales.

Our second en-suite is now up and running . Five rooms to go!

This is Arran Pilot at their 23rd(?) annual St Patrick’s Night bash at Druidstone Hotel.

This year Heather stood in for the busy John Roberts on fiddle. Cuffern Manor was booked up by a group from Bristol.( shown below) Next years event will be from 14th-16th March. Booking early, either at Druidstone or here is advisable.

The Bristol group included Anna and Jackson who successfully auditioned new daughter Sylve for the part of Cuffern gnome. Jackson and his parents Alan and Melanie are old friends from Coleford, great to see them here.

Garden News

All our fruit trees are in blossom and three apricots have already started. Everything has been held up by a very wet winter and now two weeks with no rain and very warm weather. A posse of marauding cows invaded the lawn and the walled garden in February. No long term damage was done but we have had to spend some time filling in holes. We have recently been able to clear much of the old tennis court off in the walled garden to reveal the two doorways. Now we have to decide what to do with the space. The magnolia is coming to the end of its best time and two days ago the wisteria flowered (April 14th)

And finally ....

Brian John’s first Angel book On Angel Mountain contains the following:
Martha the heroine tells her mother she is pregnant. Her mother replies:

“ My dear Martha, there but for the grace of God went I. I know something of how you feel. Your father and I married for love, and not because our parents wanted it. He was almost cut off from his family fortune because he refused to marry one of the horrid Stokes daughters from Cuffern.”

Apart from being sisters and living at Cuffern no other details apply to Jayne and Mary of course. Now though there is only one sister here. Richard and Mary left for Kettering in March and have entrusted the business to Jayne and Julian. Scary !

So should friends or guests wish to offer their time for some work in return for sustenance we would welcome this! Builders and gardeners especially welcome!
